Why did I increase my milk protein consumption 4 fold?
In 2001 my triglycerides were 456 which is about 3 times the normal level. My cholesterol was only slightly elevated and my LDL was normal. I went on a diet free of red meat and my triglycerides dropped to 284, lower but still way above normal. I found a book called Triglyceridemia that indicated that some people are genetically disposed to high triglycerides when consuming too much carbohydrate in their diet. I decided to temporarily remove most carbohydrates from my diet. At the time my normal diet included a bowl of cereal with about 4 ounces of 2% milk for breakfast almost every morning. As part of my new diet I eliminated breakfast cereal and switched this to 2 containers (16 oz) of yogurt every morning. This resulted in roughly quadrupling my intake of milk proteins. My triglycerides dropped to 84 (below normal). I reintroduced some carbohydrates into my diet, but continued eating two containers of yogurt daily until I made the decision to eliminate milk proteins. My triglycerides returned to a normal level of about 170 after reintroducing a low level of carbohydrates.
